Council Rock High School South has had another eventful and exciting year, from new plays to field trips. Both staff and students have worked hard to make the 2014-2015 school year one of the best. Also, South has adopted new events that will hopefully continue to take place for many years to come.
Golden Wings
The Golden Wings Theatre Company started their musical season with “The Addams Family”, which took place in November. The musical was based off the popular 70’s TV show and features many of the well known characters, including Gomez, Morticia, Wednesday, Pugsley, Grandma, and Fester Addams. The story also featured new characters, The Beineke family. In the musical, the Beineke son, Lucas, fell in love with Wednesday. The play included exceptional songs and brilliant jokes that told the tale of Lucas and Wednesday finding their way, with many complications caused by the zany families they both came from. Student Directed by Grant Palmer and Assistant Student Directed by Katie Lemley, this show proved to be hilarious and very entertaining.
The winter musical for Golden Wings was the heartwarming classic based on the movie starring Dick Van Dyke called “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang”. The show told the story of a widowed father, Caractacus Potts, his father, also named Caractacus, and his two young children, who try to make ends meet through inventing and selling strange contraptions. When the widowed father meets the heir to the Scrumptious Candy Fortune, Truly Scrumptious, the two find romance with each other. Meanwhile, the two must embark to save Caractacus Sr. from the evil Baron and Baroness. Student Directed by Gina LoPresti and Kyle Devine and featuring children from the various Council Rock Elementary schools, this family friendly adventure was a hit.
Golden Wings recently ended season with the dark and twisted drama known as “Dark of the Moon”. This musical took place in the Appalachian Mountain region in early times and follows the life of John, a witch boy, as he bargains his humanity to a conjure woman in order to get the love of the fair, copper-haired Barbara Allen. Through many tragic events, a lesson is learned that there is danger in bargains and in wishing for things that are not to be attained. Student Directed by Erika Shevchek and Kate Franklin, this tale of darkness and romance astounded audiences in the best ways.
Class of 2017
This year’s sophomore class has taken the year by storm. The executive board of Danielle Gormley, Mikhaila Zacharia, Zachary Rovner, Michael Feinman, and Kai McGinn, along with the advising of Mr. Fred Bauer, have planned and executed a number of great activities and fundraisers. One of these fundraisers recently held at Chipotle and had great success. Also, these student leaders continued their, now what seems to be annual, “Got Sushi fundraiser”. Plus, they planned a trip to Six Flags during Fright Fest, a great and bonding experience for the class to undergo. Congratulations to the current executive board, and good luck to all those running for the 2015-2016 year.
Music Groups
Both Choir and Orchestra participated in the Winter and Spring Concerts, which happened in their respective seasons. The various choir groups are two class period choir groups, Chorale and Symphonic, the Male A Capella group “The Men’s Room”, the women’s A Capella Group “Bello Canto”, and the mixed A Capella Group “South Vocal Ensemble”. Each performed a set of music that they had been working on over the season and each did a spectacular job. The “South Vocal Ensemble”, which is a mixed Capella group that is an audition only entry and that consisted of 35 people this year, had some great opportunities. The first of which came when the group placed in the Semi-Finals of the B101 Winter Radio Choir Contest with their version of the Pentatonix arrangement of “Angels We Have Heard on High”. Plus, in December of 2014, the group traveled to DC and performed at the White House for various tour Groups passing by.
Junior Prom
Junior Prom this year was held on April 24th at the Princeton Hyatt. All the ladies looked stunning and the men were quite dapper. The event was a good time had by all, with lots of dancing and great food with the whole Junior Class uniting to have a good time. About halfway through the festivities, the Prom King and Queen were announced. Taking the crown this year was Austin Price and Shea Moore, who shared in the King and Queen’s dance shortly afterward. One interesting trend of many people at the Junior Prom which is particularly on the rise is taking people from outside the grade. There were many Sophomores, Seniors, and even a few freshman there that night.
