As the year comes to a close, we can now look back at all the cultural clubs, and their events that took place; or are going to.
German Club
The German Club, advised by Mr. Harvey, had a wide variety of activities throughout this school year. The club itself meets several times a year, enjoys German food like pretzels, and also has activities like a gingerbread-house building competition. In November, German Club members and associates of the club attended the Cannstatter German Volksfest Verein Club, in Philadelphia, for the annual Oktoberfest. The event has been a tradition of the German Club, and gives students a firsthand look at German culture, through food, music, and dance. German Club members were also given the chance to attend a Winterfest event, at the City Tavern, in Philadelphia. Meals at this event were prepared by world-renowned chef Walter Staib. The German Honor Society, an affiliate of the German Club, also had their induction/recognition night for new and old members. The recognition night also included guest speakers, who had taken German in the past at CR South. And as a fitting conclusion to the year, German Club members have the opportunity to travel to Germany, through the exchange program. Earlier in the year, several students from Germany came to CR South and stayed with German Club members. Members who travel to Germany will the have the chance to see and enjoy the country.
French Club
The French Club, led by Madame Kohl, also had an eventful year. Throughout the year they celebrated French cultural events: Noel, la Fête des Rois, Mardi Gras. The club meets once a month in room 105, however the club will be moving to room 109. The meetings give students an experience to French Culture through food, guest speakers, movies, and discussions. The French Honor Society, an affiliate of the French Club, inducted 13 new members this year. The French Honor Society charter was created in 1949, and is a very serious organization. This year the French Honor Society was responsible for collecting and donating four-hundred books to the Ronald McDonald organization at Christmas. Recently another collection took place, this time collecting 778 books for the Juvenile Court, the Literacy Effort organization, and CHOP Reach Out and Read organization. The French Club members, similar to the German Club members, have the opportunity to go to Paris, Nice, and Monaco, in France. Thirty students are currently signed up. During the trip, students will have the opportunity to see Lascaux, a cave in southern France, which is famous for its Paleolithic cave paintings.
Latin Club
The Latin Club, advised by Mrs. Parfitt, also had a memorable year. The club meets monthly and celebrates a Roman calendar date, honoring a god or goddess or historical events. The meetings include events like games, movies, creating crafts, and cultural experiences. They also often enjoy delicious food, such as cake and ice cream. This year the club also had a chicken fundraiser. The Latin Honor Society, an affiliate of the Latin Club, also takes part in several events such as holiday gift wrapping for charity, and presentations at local elementary schools to promote the study of foreign languages.
