This has been the first year that we’ve had virtual report cards . For starters, they save paper (whoo!) and offer greater access to anyone who wants to see them (whoo?). But technology has its glitches, and sometimes old-fashioned is the best way to go.
I held a poll and received the opinions of my fellow students. Some people wanted to keep the virtual report cards because some of their parents completely forgot about them, it saved paper, and they could look at them anytime, anywhere.
The majority liked the paper ones better, though, because they could easily and accidentally become “lost” or, simply, they liked sticking to old habits. In my opinion, having a real hard-copy in your hands feels way better than grasping at virtual letters.
I mean, HAC is not without its problems. There have been countless times when the server’s crashed, especially when the report cards are released, and who knows how long until it recovers again? Besides, sometimes it has weird bugs in it, where some are able to access it with ease and others are left wondering where their grades went. And now thanks to HAC, glitches in people’s grades are abundant. At the end of the marking period we all have to rush to the computers to check if each and every grade is correct. What if I don’t? I may get a B instead of an A for a marking period or two, and maybe even end up with a B as my final grade.
But hey, we’re still getting used to this whole technology thing. I just think that we shouldn’t have had virtual report cards so soon - we all know HAC has its glitches even without parents overloading its servers on report card day. On the other hand, maybe I’m just not thinking fourth dimensionally.
