Rant #1: Homecoming
There are two big events that everybody knows are the major aspects of high school: prom and homecoming. While prom is such a major event for most South students, none of us will ever be able to experience what a homecoming at South might be like. Now, the rumor is that it was cancelled due to parent complaints, but we plan on complaining right back. Ask all parents - they remember their homecoming. Unfortunately, we will never have that privilege. Now while we do have winter/fall ball, it just isn’t the same. All we want is the homecoming football game and the homecoming court. All of our friends that go to different schools talk about their amazing homecoming experiences, and we’re stuck with the Great Value that is our school’s version of homecoming.
Rant #2: Blue, White, and Gold Night
Blue, White, and Gold Night is just South’s imitation of a pep rally. However, there are some very significant differences between the two. Competition is fun in concept, but sometimes it can get taken out of hand. Another issue is that the whole event itself is totally rigged, and therefore takes all of the fun out of the competition. We understand that it's the seniors last year, but they don’t deserve the win if they don’t work for it. Plus, why can't we alter our outfits? We can grasp why the administration did what they did, because just wearing caution tape is not okay, but that doesn’t mean we need to dress like nuns. Now, while we understand why regulating outfits at the door is important, we do not understand why we’re not allowed to even roll up our sleeves. All in all, Blue, White, and Gold Night is a decent idea, but it is executed poorly.
Rant #3: The Library
We appreciate how organized the librarians keep the library, and the website, but we don’t understand why it is locked down like Fort Knox. We love the irony of how the library made the area in the back the “bistro” and was thinking about adding a coffee machine back there, and yet now kids can’t even eat their lunch while catching up on some work at those back tables. Plus, there is no reason why we should have to bring our IDs to the library. We get it, before the whole ID thing the noise in the library was getting out of hand, but the fact that we need our IDs to get in is counterproductive. If we had planned to meet someone in the library for tutoring and one of us forgot our ID, we have to find a new work space. It completely defeats the purpose of having a library. We understand that things can't go back to how they used to be, but the regulations need to be productive and beneficial to everybody involved.
