Ah, Senior Trip. That one week of bliss in Disney World that every high school student looks forward to for the entirety of their high school career. But apparently, it’s also super controversial.
It’s controversial for a couple of reasons – of course, because of some not-to-be-named kids that think that a school trip is the ideal place to ‘turn up’, but also for a purely academic reason. Some think to themselves – maybe an entire class of people missing classes for an entire week of school is kind of detrimental.
And it is, I get it.
But, all that being said, I still think that getting rid of senior trip would be a bad idea. And no, that’s not because I’ll be a senior next year and I want to spend a week in Disney World with my friends…okay, maybe that is the reason, a little bit. But, it’s completely valid! I’m not alone.
In a recent poll that I graciously conducted of the 20 people I actually speak to, only 1 person disagreed with me. And this person is suffering from a severe lack of love in their life. Kidding, kidding…but seriously, this person agreed with the academic argument. Some people don’t want to miss a week of school or can’t afford it, and that’s perfectly respectable.
But, that’s no reason to get rid of this tradition. It’s something we’ve all been looking forward to and have heard about constantly for practically our whole academic careers. The only thing I remember from elementary school is that rumor saying that senior trip was going to be done away with for our class, and our 4th grade teacher Mrs. Smith (Holland represent, anyone?) saying that senior trip will never go away. “It’s been around since I was in high school,” she said. The fact that I blocked out most of my elementary school days and still remember that conversation really says something about the impact and importance of senior trip.
We should keep it around – it’s tradition.
